With
the fervour of creativity running throught the family,
Lopamudra Chakravoty was bound to grow up the way she
did. Her love for music became noticeable quite early
life, thanks to inspiration from the mother's side.
Yet later, while going for a formal training in art,
unhesitatingly she opted for modelling and sculpture,
in view of father Debabrata Chakravorty enjoying much
of a reputation as a sculptor on graduation from the
Rabindra Bharati University in Calcutta, expectedly
she began sculpting. But that hardly marked any break
with music, since she now appeared more seriously involved
with it winning high praises for the distinctive approach
of hers.
While the earlier phase saw her
receiving training in chhota kheyals and Rabindra Sangeet,
subsequently in the wake of the young aspirant's hankering
for something special relating to classical Hindustani
music, she found herself placed under the tutelage of
Guru Siva Sankar Mukhopadjyaya, an acknowledged exponent
of the Gauharvanm singing.
As is known, the Dhrupad tradition
an older and purer one, enjoys particular association
with Maharaj Man Singh of Gwalior. For its abstracted
connotations and less of lighter aspects noted in kheyal,
this form is not as popular and calls for more strain
in terms of acquiring skill. Women were discouraged
from practising this music. The Guru, to good fortune
of all, in the present case relented and accepted the
girl student bypassing the idea, that the area was a
privileged domain of males.
Courageous and determined Lopa
as if made of sterner stuff, move on Regular riyaz or
practice for long hours, amounted to sadhana or meditation
and 'surrender', well on for years. The idealistic zeal
and the acquired skill, luckily, did not go unnoticed.
Her performances in response to invitations, both for
solo programmes as also by way of participation in conferences,
if duly brought for her acclaims, she also received
words of encouragement and appreciation from experts
and those who matter. She considers it a single honour
when Pandit Ravi Shankar unable to come to a programme
of hers due to busy schedule, but could spare some time
to her certain renderings and in the end praised the
endeavour. Surely something very significant for a young
enterant in the field. |
